Fado is made from the wool of black merino sheep from the province of Alentejo in southern Portugal. This good quality wool (23 microns) is naturally black in colour. The Fonty and Lainamac spinning mill (natural wools from the Massif Central) initiated the introduction of this breed in Creuse (F) to be able to produce a yarn with minimal impact on the environment: no dyeing, little transport. This mini sector corresponds to the expectations of the spinning mill but also to the need for diversification of production for the farmers of the Creuse who are in need of recognition of their work and know-how.
This wool is used pure in the dark colour and mixed, in the other colours, with extra white merino lamb from the Arles region, which gives the yarn its tweedy aspect. You can help Lainamac by sponsoring a black sheep : www.histoiresdelaines.fr
Many inspired combinations:
With Vercors Yarnflakes has come up with a cowl that is as rustic as the wool.
With Autumn Forest Eri Shimizu an automnal jumper.
